Dear Colleagues,

Every year since 1994 when we began the Select Strategies Seminar, we have sought to improve the presentations and this year’s events will be consistent with that objective. Dr. Kenneth Mayland, the well known Cleveland based economist will be back giving us another stimulating presentation on the economy. For the October 29th event, Markus Schomer, Chief Economist for PineBridge Investments will be sharing his insights. We will also have at the October 29 event, Steve Parrish, the National Advanced Solutions Consultant for the Principal Financial Group. In addition, Smith and Condeni attorneys are presenting all new topics on planning issues that you need to understand. Our unabashed goal is to help you improve your skills so as to better assist clients in handling their financial and insurance planning needs.

Over the years, our annual seminar has continued to grow and develop. Last year, for the first time, we did two presentations to accommodate the demand. Attendance increased by 35% over the prior year with about 550 persons attending the seminars. We are expecting another large turnout this year so please register early.

We are very appreciative of the financial support provided by our sponsors which allows us again this year to offer this seminar for free. I would like to offer a special thanks to our long time sponsor and friend, Bill Davis at NorthCoast for his assistance in securing sponsors for Dr. Mayland and Mr. Parrish. Special thanks also to Don Qualters at SunAmerica Mutual Funds for sponsoring Mr. Schomer’s appearance.

N. Lindsey Smith

Special Instructions:

A number of questions on this study exam were designed to test your knowledge of certain aspects of the federal estate tax (i.e., marital deductions, tax credits, basis adjustments, etc.). While the federal estate tax is currently repealed for the 2010 calendar year, for purposes of answering any questions pertaining to the federal estate tax, and unless otherwise directed in the questions themselves, you should assume the following:

(i) That the federal estate tax is, in fact, in effect; and
(ii) That the rules governing that tax are identical to those in effect for the 2009 calendar year.

We recommend that you focus your study on the information in Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 12, 15 and 16 and then take the sample test. Of course, other information in the book may be of value in preparing for the test, but these are the primary chapters that need your attention.
